Alexandria is an ancient city on the Egyptian coast that sits right on the Mediterranean shoreline. It was founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC and one time hosted a seventh wonder of the ancient world: the Great Lighthouse of Alexandria, and the famous Library of Alexandria. Later, it is a city that vibrates in a mix of ancient and modern, with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina being one of the highlights—it is a modern library and cultural center designed to pay honors to the ancient library. Other highlights include the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa and the Roman Amphitheatre. Nice views of the Mediterranean Sea, which can be observed from the picturesque Corniche—a waterfront promenade—also belong to the list of the city’s highlights.
