Aswan is a beautiful town in southern Egypt and is somewhat endowed with a feeling of tranquility from its location along the banks of the Nile River. Pre-eminent among the visible structures is the Aswan High Dam, which impounded Lake Nasser and has contributed greatly to the development of modern irrigation and power facilities needed by Egypt. Pre-eminent among the sites should be the Temple of Philae, which is warm and accessible to the goddess Isis, and the Unfinished Obelisk, the gigantic single stone that was abandoned at the quarry. Aswan is a perfect base for arranging tours to the temples of Abu Simbel and very peaceful rides on the Nile aboard a felucca. Attractions within Aswan include the Nubian Museum, which gives an insight into the vibrant culture of Nubia.
