About Desert Castles
So-called Desert Castles, or “Qasr” in Arabic, actually is a group of early Islamic castles in the eastern desert of Jordan. They combined multiple functions: some were used for military defense, while others served as hunting lodges or caravanserais. Among them, one should mention Qasr Amra with its very well-preserved frescoes, Qasr Kharana with its mighty architecture for defense, and Qasr al-Hallabat, where Roman and Islamic architectures are mixed. These castles are unique, offering insight into the life and times of early Islamic rulers and their adaptation to desert environments.
