Jerash was known as ancient Gerasa and is considered one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world. Within the site abound ruins, including an oval plaza, a grand open area surrounded by colonnades, and a Temple of Artemis—a major religious edifice—and the Roman Theater, still used today for performances. During Roman times, it was a great trading center, and it contained a series of streets, temples, and baths in good condition to detail the flavor of what the city was in the past.
