About Petra
Petra is called the “Rose City” due to the pink-colored rocks. This place belongs to one of the most popular archaeological sites worldwide. Built around the 6th century BC by the Nabataeans, Petra was a large trading hub that linked the Arabian Peninsula with the Mediterranean. Prominent among its rock-cut structures is a feature called the Treasury, which is cut directly into the sandstone cliffs. Tucked within the huge archaeological site of Petra are the Roman-style Theater, the Monastery (Ad-Deir), and a host of tombs and temples. It was rediscovered by the Western world in 1812 by the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
