The city of Madaba is identified with a wealthy Byzantine and early Islamic heritage. The most famous landmark of the place is the so-called Madaba Map, which dates back to a 6th-century mosaic map found within the Church of St. George, showing the Holy Land and Jerusalem in immense detail. Other key churches and archaeological sites can be found in Madaba, notably the Church of the Apostles and that of the Virgin Mary. The city center is for traditional mosaic making, and visitors may enter workshops and galleries to see how this ancient art form was created.
